Around the Community: Wills for First Responders
5.12.18
Cathy Hutton, a paralegal in the Firm’s Covington, Kentucky office, created the Wills for Heroes Program in 2002 in response to the attacks on 9/11. Cathy is the Pro Bono Chairman for the Cincinnati Paralegal Association. The CPA brings together volunteer lawyers and paralegals to prepare wills, living wills, health care directives, HIPAA releases and organ donor forms for first responders and their spouses, all completely free of charge. The program (now called Wills For First Responders) has been a huge success with backing from many volunteers in the legal community and the Hamilton County probate judge, Judge Ralph Winkler. Since inception, the organization has prepared estate planning documents for over 1000 first responders in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. On Saturday, May 12, the organization had an event in Cincinnati. At the event, Wills, Living Wills and Healthcare Power of Attorneys were provided to First Responders and their spouses. Additional events are set for July 21 and September 15.
